Gastrodia (Tianma) is a valuable traditional Chinese medicinal herb, known for its calming, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is widely used in the field of traditional Chinese medicine. To ensure the stability of its medicinal effects and prolong its shelf life after processing, drying technology becomes a critical step in the production of Gastrodia. A scientifically sound drying process can not only extend the shelf life of Gastrodia but also preserve its active ingredients and medicinal properties, ensuring product quality.

Drying Process:
Gastrodia is typically harvested when fully mature, as its medicinal potency is at its peak at this time. After harvesting, the Gastrodia undergoes initial processing to remove dirt and impurities from the surface, and the outer skin is peeled off to ensure that the Gastrodia entering the drying stage is clean and free of debris.
To ensure uniform drying, the cleaned Gastrodia is sliced. Slicing not only shortens the drying time but also helps reduce surface hardening during the drying process.
Some Gastrodia may require pre-treatment before drying, such as low-temperature blanching, to reduce enzymatic reactions during drying and maintain the natural color and medicinal ingredients of the Gastrodia.
Drying is the core step in Gastrodia processing. Currently, hot air drying is the most common method. Gastrodia slices are placed in drying equipment where even heat is applied through hot air. The temperature is usually controlled between 50°C and 60°C to ensure that the active ingredients of the herb are not damaged. Depending on the moisture content, the drying time typically ranges from 8 to 12 hours.
After drying, Gastrodia must cool naturally to room temperature and is then sealed for packaging. Proper sealing helps prevent moisture reabsorption, maintaining the dryness of the Gastrodia and extending its storage life. Properly processed Gastrodia retains its natural color, dries evenly, and has a long shelf life, meeting market demands.
